Ayurvedic intestinal cleansing

Our intestines do a lot of work every day, so a healthy intestinal flora is essential for the entire organism. In order for harmful bacteria to be completely eliminated, occasional cleansing of the intestines is highly recommended. Why such a bowel detox is important and how you can carry out an Ayurvedic intestinal cleansing at home, you can find out here.
Why is intestinal cleansing useful?
A full 80 percent of the immune system is controlled by our intestines. This means: if the intestines are not doing well, it will sooner or later result in a physical reaction. Possible symptoms include:
Headaches
Fatigue and poor sleep
Digestive problems
Stomach inflammation
Skin impurities or skin diseases
Cardiovascular problems
Concentration disorders
Even anxiety and depression can be linked to intestinal issues. The cause of these problems is mainly found on the inner wall of the large intestine. In its folds and pockets, bacteria or metabolic residues, known in Ayurveda as Ama, can accumulate. The more these “blockages” build up, the more difficult it becomes for the intestines to keep your body healthy.
However, even if you do not experience acute health problems, an intestinal detox is certainly not pointless. A bowel cleansing and intestinal rehabilitation allows the intestinal wall to regenerate. You will see: after completing a bowel cleanse you will feel much lighter and have more energy again. No wonder – after all, your Agni, your digestive fire, can now work undisturbed!
It is important here to distinguish between intestinal cleansing and intestinal rehabilitation. A bowel cleansing is a rather short-term process that you can carry out at home with a few simple methods. The goal is to detoxify the large intestine, since the small intestine can cleanse itself relatively quickly.
In contrast, intestinal rehabilitation involves several different measures in combination and is a course that can last several weeks or even months. This may be necessary if the intestine is particularly weakened and symptoms are clearly noticeable. However, here we assume that you simply want to do something good for your digestive organs and therefore carry out a bowel cleanse.
Instructions: Ayurvedic intestinal cleansing at home
There are different ways in which Ayurveda can help cleanse the intestines. One of them is the classic Ayurveda fasting cure. In this, you largely avoid solid food so that the intestines have as little work as possible and can regenerate better.
Intestinal detox: yoga and massages
During any bowel cleansing, yoga and massages can help to cleanse the intestines even more effectively.
An example is the following exercise:
Sit in a cross-legged position with an upright back.
Place your hands loosely on your knees and arrive in the posture.
Now place the fingertips of the left hand lightly behind the body on the floor and place the right hand on the left knee.
Turn to the left so that you can look back over your left shoulder.
Hold this position briefly and repeat the movement on the other side.

You can also stimulate the digestive tract by massaging the abdominal area. This works best if you do it for about 10 minutes in the morning and evening. Lie on your back and slightly bend your knees so that the abdomen can be completely relaxed. Now you can use the fingers of one hand and gentle pressure to massage clockwise around the navel.
Cleanse the intestines through proper nutrition
Apart from the active exercises you can use for intestinal detoxification, nutrition naturally also plays a major role in cleansing the large intestine. Make sure to eat light, warm foods – in the morning porridge, at midday for example rice with steamed vegetables or kitchari, and in the evening vegetable soups.
To also activate the liver, which is our largest detoxification organ, you can use bitter substances in the form of herbs, vegetables, or alcohol-free Swedish bitters or bitter spray.
Optionally, you can also take the spice Triphala every evening by dissolving 1 teaspoon of the powder in a cup of warm water before going to bed and drinking the mixture slowly. Triphala helps to eliminate toxins from the gastrointestinal tract and therefore significantly supports intestinal cleansing.
In the morning, you can also drink a glass of warm water with a little lemon juice, honey, and ginger right after waking up. This combination of ingredients stimulates the metabolism.
Your intestines will also be happy in the long run if you make this ritual a daily habit!
What is meant by autumn fatigue?
In Ayurveda, October marks the Vata season. Autumn therefore represents a transition from Pitta, the fire element, to Vata, which stands for air and space. The air element is responsible for movement, which is why many fluctuations in our physical and mental energy levels can occur.
This can be caused by lower outdoor temperatures: the body must generate more heat to maintain its temperature. This requires more energy than in summer. Energy consumption is therefore higher and can more quickly lead to exhaustion or fatigue. In autumn, the body typically needs more energy for almost all functions – from digestion to metabolism and regeneration.
How is autumn fatigue different from autumn depression?
Autumn fatigue is a symptom of the seasonal transition. It is not constant but fluctuates. On a sunny day, you may feel better than on a dark, rainy one.
In depression, the low mood is typically constant over a longer period and less dependent on external factors.
Are there nutrients we lose in autumn?
With less sunlight, vitamin D production decreases for most people. In addition, there is less regional fruit and vegetables available in autumn, which can reduce dietary variety.
At the same time, the body has a higher energy demand in autumn than in summer, so a balanced diet becomes especially important. Instead, the immune and metabolic systems are often more stressed, making us more susceptible to colds and infections.
How and when can I prevent autumn fatigue?
From mid-September, or as soon as temperatures drop and days become shorter, you can start adding more warm meals to your diet.
You should also use sunny days to strengthen the immune system and prepare the body for autumn.
Spending time with family and friends, doing activities together or exercising can increase serotonin production (the “happiness hormones”) and help counter low mood.
Playing with pets or taking long evening walks can also help reduce sluggishness.
Why recommend Ayurveda for autumn fatigue?
Ayurveda is a lifestyle that is not primarily focused on curing disease, but on maintaining health. Therefore, it offers many routines and tools that help maintain a healthy lifestyle even in challenging times.
5 Ayurvedic tips against autumn fatigue at a glance
Start the day with a positive morning routine and, if possible, some time outdoors in the sun
Include warm meals in your diet, especially for breakfast and dinner
Eat dairy in moderation, nuts, root vegetables and warming spices (e.g. cinnamon, cloves, allspice) to reduce Vata and promote grounding
Self-massage with sesame or almond oil improves circulation and relaxes muscles and the nervous system
Spend time with family and friends, preferably in nature, instead of sitting in front of screens

Side effects: possible initial worsening?
Any form of colon cleansing always means a certain adjustment for the body. Therefore, so-called detox reactions may occur. The emphasis is on “may” – it is also possible that you notice no significant side effects at all.
Possible side effects include:
Headaches and low energy
Skin impurities
Constipation
Bad breath
Increased sweating
Circulatory problems
However, it is almost impossible to predict specific side effects of any detox method. Every person brings different physical conditions. As in Ayurveda in general, this also applies to colon cleansing: your body reacts in its own unique way.
If side effects occur, consult an Ayurvedic specialist, doctor, or alternative practitioner you trust. If you have pre-existing conditions, you should clarify in advance whether a colon cleanse is recommended and which method is best.
What is important when cleansing the colon?
First and foremost: take plenty of time for a colon cleanse. It may take hours or days until intestinal activity becomes noticeable, and you may have less energy during this phase and need more rest.
It is also important to drink plenty of fluids so that deposits can be flushed out and the body remains hydrated. Ideally, 1.5–2 liters of warm water per day.
The third major factor is nutrition. The most easily digestible and therefore most suitable food for cleansing is light meals, as they place the least strain on the digestive system.
Movement practices such as Hatha Yoga asanas or abdominal massages can also support the process.
Ideally, detoxification is part of a holistic lifestyle. This means aligning both diet and movement with what is beneficial for your body and mind. It also means continuing to support these aspects after the cleanse, for example by regularly including a fasting day. A colon cleanse does not have to be complicated – and can still have a strong effect.
Daily plan for an Ayurvedic colon cleanse
The cleanse should be done on a day when you can take time for yourself and are not exposed to additional stress.
In the morning, avoid heavy foods and start with water or tea, optionally a light porridge.
From midday onwards, only light food is recommended, ideally a rice soup. This can be repeated again in the early evening.
7:00 a.m.+
Drink a large glass of lukewarm water slowly, in small sips, with lemon juice, honey, and ginger.
7:15 a.m.+
Start with the first gentle yoga exercises, as described above.
7:30 a.m.+
Drink a second large glass of lukewarm water with psyllium husks – optionally combined with 1–2 tablespoons of castor oil or an enema. However, you should clarify this in advance with your doctor, alternative practitioner, or Ayurvedic specialist.
7:45 a.m.+
Do some more gentle yoga exercises.
8:00 a.m.+
Drink a third glass.
9:00 a.m.+
Abdominal massage for about 10 minutes – use plenty of massage oil!
9:15 a.m.+
Time for an Ayurvedic breakfast: a warm oatmeal porridge with steamed apples is well suited for this.
10:00 a.m.+
Repeat the drinking regimen and yoga exercises (drink, yoga, drink, yoga, drink) for the next hour.
11:00 a.m.+
Before lunch, you can relax and rest a bit. Repeat the drinking regimen and yoga exercises (drink, yoga, drink, yoga, drink) for the next hour.
12:00 p.m.+
For an Ayurvedic colon cleanse, a suitable lunch should be freshly prepared from Ayurvedic cuisine. We recommend a rice soup or kitchari.
1:00 p.m.+
Take a digestive walk after your meal.
3:00 p.m.+
Drink a cup of ginger water or lukewarm ginger tea.
6:00 p.m.+
Prepare an easily digestible dinner, ideally a light soup.
8:00 p.m.+
End the day with yoga and meditation, and massage your feet for about 10 minutes using plenty of oil.

Before going to sleep, you can repeat the 10-minute abdominal massage from the morning.
Avoid any kind of stress between the individual steps of the program. We wish you every success in carrying out the colon cleansing.
