Pippali: All about long pepper in Ayurveda

Pippali, the long pepper, brings energy and has a stimulating effect on mind and body. In Ayurveda, it is not only an effective detox agent but is also used for medicinal purposes. The fiery spice fits almost all dishes and can thus fully unfold its effect at every meal. Here we show you the effects of Pippali and provide delicious tips for preparation that will ignite your digestive fire.
What is Pippali?
The long pepper, or Latin Piper longum, is a perennial climbing plant native to the warmer regions of India . It has been used there as medicine for thousands of years and is highly appreciated due to its good taste. Specifically, it is the approximately 4-5 cm elongated fruits that are used. They look a bit like catkins and are already dried when still unripe because their effect is strongest then.
As pleasantly hot powder, the pepper is used in various dishes. If you are not a fan of spiciness and the thought of spicy food alone makes you sweat, we have a comparison to calm you: Pippali is about as hot as black pepper, but much gentler on the stomach.
Pippali as Rasayana: The effect of long pepper
Long pepper plays a very special role in Ayurveda , as it is considered a Rasayana, a rejuvenating agent. This is because its sweet, warming spiciness stimulates digestion and cleanses the body. It consequently reduces Vataand Kaphadoshas and strengthens Pitta. However, the pepper does not act too strongly on the Pitta dosha, making it beneficial even for the fiery Pitta types, who usually should be cautious with stimulating spices. The spice even brings along a series of positive effects.
Strengthening for body and mind
The long pepper has an stimulating and strengthening effect and stimulates the immune system. It ensures a clear, sharp mind and strengthens both cognitive abilities and comprehension. It can also help regenerate tissues and give the necessary strength for allergies and rheumatic complaints to regain balance. The fiery spice breathes new life into you and provides valuable energy. Thus, you are well-equipped for the daily challenges!
Slim with long pepper: good for digestion
If you want to lose weight, long pepper is an ideal helper. As an ingredient, it ignites Agni, the digestive fire, and thus combats excess weight.
Metabolic waste is reduced and cravings successfully curbed. Especially for Kaphas and Vatas, the pepper is the optimal detox spice!
Mucolytic – finally breathe freely!
Even as a medicinal plant, the spice is effective. It has a mucus-reducing effect and eases breathing. So, it's no surprise that the pepper is used in Ayurveda especially for colds and conditions like chronic bronchitis or asthma .
In this way, it cleans your airways and lets you breathe easy again.

Are there side effects of Pippali?
Spicy food is indeed healthy, but like many things, it also depends on the dose. While the spice is certainly health-promoting when used normally, it should not be used excessively or in high dosages over a long period. Otherwise, it might disturb the balance of the doshas again and the pepper will not have the intended effect. If you already notice heartburn or increased sweating, definitely reduce the amount. Especially Pittas should not overdo it!
Tasty Pippali: Use of the pepper
The great thing about the pepper is that it can be added to almost any dish to refine it! The easiest way is to buy some Pippali and mix it into lunch as a spice. As a tasty addition, it goes particularly well with curries or chutneys. A mix of three parts turmeric and one part Pippali is especially delicious. This not only stabilizes the appetite but also stimulates digestion.
The pepper is also part of the most important stimulating spice combination in Ayurveda, namely the spice blend Trikatu. This powerful mix of Pippali, black pepper, and ginger is a true miracle elixir for digestive disorders! The dynamic blend provides quick relief for digestive tract issues and tastes exceptionally good. But that's not all! The spice can do much more.
Pippali with honey: reduces Kapha
A tip from Ayurveda is to combine the pepper with a little honey. Simply take ½ teaspoon of the pepper with some honey in the morning. This combination reduces Kapha and helps particularly with weight loss. If you want, you can develop the recipe a bit further:
¼ teaspoon Pippali Churna
¼ teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon honey
All ingredients are simply mixed in a small container and swallowed before eating . This gets the metabolism going again and fuels Agni.
Traditional milk with long pepper: for excess Vata
If you wish to reduce Vata , you can treat yourself by taking long pepper with ghee or milk. It is a true energy booster and refills empty reserves. Here is our favorite recipe for a classic milk with spicy long pepper:
250 ml water
250 ml milk
½ teaspoon Pippali powder
Rock sugar
The preparation is very simple: Just let water, milk, and Pippali simmer over medium heat until the water evaporates and about 250 ml of liquid remains. Then, strain the mixture and sweeten with some rock sugar according to taste.
The Pippali step cure
Give your body some rest and try the so-called step cure! Especially in spring, this cure is ideal for reducing excess Ama from winter and cleansing the body! However, also with Kapha disturbances such as being overweight, colds, coughs, or asthma, it can quickly be effective in restoring balance.
Here's how it works:
In the step cure, the pepper is consumed over 14 days first in increasing, then in decreasing dosage taken. To do this, cook the powder together with 125 ml of water and 125 ml of milk until only 125 ml of liquid remains. This mixture should be drunk 2x daily, preferably in the morning and after lunch.
But what about the dosage of the Churna ? Start on the first day with 1 g of Pippali and increase the dosage daily by 0.5 g until the fifth day. Maintain this amount of 3 g of pepper for the next three days. Then, reduce the dosage again by 0.5 g each day until the course is over.
Give body and mind an energy boost with the spirited Pippali! The long pepper enhances practically any dish and is as effective for weight loss as it is liberating for the respiratory system. Those who want to reduce Kapha and Vata will find the Indian pepper just right.
