Du bist nur so gesund wie Deine Darmflora, deshalb schenke Deinen Darm durch eine gesunde, ayurvedische Lebensweise die Aufmerksamkeit, die er verdient.

Research over the last decades has painted a clear picture: you are only as healthy as your gut flora. The intricate interaction of various microorganisms in your digestion protects you from illness and significantly contributes to your well-being. Reason enough to give your gut the attention it deserves through a healthy Ayurvedic lifestyle.

With about eight meters in length, the gut - along with the skin - is the organ that connects the most with the outside world in terms of surface area. Every type of food or drink is processed here for further use in the body. Which substances are absorbed and which are excreted is decided by the 'brain' of your gut: the microbiome.

Your gut and the microbiome

The microbiome is the entirety of all microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi working together in your gut. They collectively manage food digestion, strengthen your immune system, and protect you from pathogens.

The significance of a healthy microbiome was recognized by Ayurvedic practitioners long ago: they describe in the 'Charaka Samhita,' one of the oldest Ayurvedic texts, how the digestive fire Agni burns toxins (Ama). Ama can be the result of a weak microbiome, allowing toxins, food residues, and environmental pollutants to enter your body. This promotes the development of a variety of diseases, such as:

  • obesity and cardiovascular diseases

  • inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome

  • allergies, autoimmune diseases, and depression

To strengthen the microbiome, Ayurvedic teachings recommend a variety of measures.

Tips for your gut health

  • Nutritious foods: 'You are what you eat' is not an empty phrase when it comes to your gut health! One of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda is a balanced diet with fresh, seasonal, and unprocessed foods rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

  • Prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics: These food components support the balance and diversity of microorganisms in the gut. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria, like inulin found in foods such as chicory, artichokes, garlic, onions, and bananas. Probiotics are 'good' bacteria that help improve the balance of your gut flora and fight harmful bacteria. Probiotics are often taken as supplements but are also found in fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, or kimchi. Postbiotics are metabolites of probiotic microorganisms that have health-promoting effects.

  • Cleansing and detoxification: A regular gut cleanse is one of the pillars of Ayurvedic teachings. Ancient texts mention that according to Ayurvedic practitioners, half of all diseases can be healed through so-called 'Bastis' or cleansing procedures. At least once a year, the gut should be relieved through an Ayurvedic cure. Depending on your constitution type, the light fasting recommended during the cure can also help strengthen the gut microbiome.

Holistically healthy

Moreover, Ayurveda places great importance on the significance of a healthy lifestyle and daily routines to maintain balance in the body. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management are crucial for strong gut health. Mental and physical stress can, like nutrition, disrupt the balance of the microbiome and impair digestive function. To stay balanced in everyday life, you can support your digestion with Ayurvedic herbs and spices specifically formulated to support gut health.
