Ayurveda and Acupressure: Marma Points and Their Effects

They connect the central energy pathways in our body. When stimulated, they influence our nervous system, individual organs, and our psyche: Ayurvedic Marma points have always symbolized the connection between the external world and your body and consciousness. Targeted acupressure and Ayurvedic massage allow the Marma points to unfold their healing effects.
In European Ayurveda®, there are a variety of therapeutic techniques aimed at restoring balance in the body and activating self-healing powers. One particularly effective method, to prevent illnesses from arising in the first place, is acupressure in Ayurvedic massages such as Mukabhyanga, face, neck, and foot massage. As many as 37 of the total 107 Marma points in Ayurveda are located in the head and neck area.
What are Marma points?
Marma points are vital energy centers in the body, where muscles, tendons, bones, joints, nerves, and blood vessels intersect. They are essentially crossroads of the life-sustaining energy pathways in the body and are therefore referred to as "gates of consciousness." By stimulating the Marma points the flow of Prana (life energy) can be harmonized and blockages can be released, leading to good health and enhanced well-being. The main Marma points can be located along the seven chakras along the spine.
The healing points were discovered about 1,500 years ago by a doctor in the Indian army, who correlated the healing ability of injuries with their position on the body while treating wounded soldiers. Over time, he described 107 sensitive points of the human body that should not be injured during operations.
The effects of Marma points
Targeted stimulation of the Marma points by trained Ayurvedic therapists has a variety of positive effects on your body and mind:
Detoxification and Cleansing: Many Marma points are located near lymph nodes and thereby support the body's natural detoxification. Stimulating these points promotes the removal of toxins and metabolic waste, cleansing the body.
Energetic Balance: The Marma points are closely connected to the three main energy pathways in the body, known as Nadis. Targeted stimulation of the Marma points harmonizes the energy flow of Shushuma, Ida, and Pingala, leading to balanced energy levels and increased vitality.
Pain Relief: Some Marma points have pain-relieving effects and can be used for various ailments like headaches, back pain, or joint pain. Stimulation of these points releases natural body messengers and alleviates pain.
Emotional Balance: Certain Marma points are directly related to your emotions. Their stimulation can help to resolve mental blockages, reduce stress, and promote a sense of calm and balance.

Application in Acupressure
Acupressure of Marma points is usually performed with gentle to medium pressure and circular movements. For persistent blockages, holding the affected points for a certain time can provide relief. The stimulation of Marma points for therapy should always be conducted by an Ayurvedic expert – however, you can also activate some points yourself in everyday life:
Hand Marma: This Marma point is located in the center of the palm. Place your thumb in the center of the opposite palm. Gently press with your index and middle fingers on the back of the hand against the same point and massage the Marma point with the thumb, middle, and index finger for at least 3 minutes. Self-massage relaxes the hand after long office work, combats exhaustion, and stress.
Toe Marma: This Marma is located in the soft space between the big and second toe. Sit comfortably and stabilize the foot with one hand. Use your thumb, index, and middle fingers of the other hand to grasp the point and massage it gently for at least 3 minutes. Massaging the toe Marma prevents calf cramps, ensures relaxation, and helps with falling asleep.
Heart Marma: The Heart Marma is located at the level of your sternum. In a standing or lying position, place your right palm on the sternum. Place your left hand on your navel. Now gently massage your sternum with your right hand for at least 3 minutes. Stimulation of the Heart Marma dispels self-doubt and boosts your immune system.
