Healthy at any age: Prevent high blood pressure with European Ayurveda®

Stress, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise - high blood pressure is a condition that can affect young people depending on their lifestyle. From an Ayurvedic perspective, an imbalance of the doshas can also lead to hypertension (high blood pressure). You will learn how to prevent this risk factor for your health and what you can do if your high blood pressure persists in this article.
Widespread and often unnoticed: High blood pressure can become a significant cardiovascular risk. At high levels, symptoms such as restlessness, dizziness, sleep problems, or emotional fluctuations may occur, eventually leading to heart disease and circulatory disorders. We generally recommend medical supervision for this condition – but up to a certain extent, you can already counteract high blood pressure with small lifestyle adjustments .
Properly measure and determine blood pressure
Blood pressure indicates how much force blood is pumped through a vessel. During this process, two values are measured: The first value is systolic blood pressure. It determines the pressure during the heartbeat when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood into the vessels. The second is diastolic blood pressure. It determines the pressure on the vessels when the heart muscle relaxes.
In adults, blood pressure should be approximately 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). If the systolic value is over 140 and/or the diastolic value is over 90, it is considered high blood pressure. For those prone to high blood pressure, the value should be regularly checked independently. If your values are unremarkable or in a healthy range, it is sufficient to have them checked at regular intervals – for example, at annual appointments with your general practitioner.

Do you suffer from high blood pressure? Before resorting to medication, it's worth clarifying the underlying causes. For physical dysfunctions such as metabolic problems, hormonal imbalance, genetic disposition, or autoimmune issues, you should definitely consult a doctor. Other common reasons for high blood pressure can be self-regulated: Stress, poor eating habits, lack of exercise, being overweight, alcohol, and tobacco consumption can lead to hypertension.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, a dosha imbalance can promote high blood pressure. Individuals with an excess of Pitta (which can result from excessive alcohol, tobacco, or spicy food) as well as those with a Vata excess (which can result from stress or lack of sleep) tend to have high blood pressure. A Kapha imbalance, caused by obesity or metabolic disorders, can also result in high blood pressure. What is your constitution type? Here’s the Dosha Test.
The following tips for a healthy blood pressure can be easily integrated into everyday life and are beneficial for you and your body:
Incorporate at least 15 minutes of outdoor exercise into your daily routine.
Cook fresh and seasonal as often as possible instead of buying ready meals.
Reduce your meat and salt consumption. Avoid red meat in particular and opt for vegetables and legumes as often as possible.
Avoid very hot drinks and overly spicy or warming spices.
Take time for relaxation. This could be a soothing yoga session, meditation, a walk in the woods, or a gentle oil massage. You decide what feels good for you.
Regularly drink herbal and detox teas – e.g., hibiscus flowers, elderflower, rose petals, or nettle. Which tea is best for you depends on the cause of your high blood pressure. For metabolic issues, you can additionally support the liver with bitters.
